What is Sever’s Disease?
Sever’s Disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is an irritation or inflammation of the growth plate at the back of the heel bone in growing children. It is not a true disease but a repetitive strain injury that is more common in physically active children and during growth spurts.
What Causes Sever’s Disease?
Sever’s disease has multiple possible causes including repetitive stress on the heel from walking, running, or jumping; tight Achilles tendon that pulls on the heel bone; and rapid bone growth. The growth plate is made of cartilage and is weaker than nearby tendons and ligaments, making it vulnerable to trauma.
How We Treat Sever’s Disease
To treat Sever’s Disease, it is important to treat the immediate pain first through rest, activity modification, icing, and anti-inflammatory medication. For long term treatment, while the growth plate is still open, stretching, supportive footwear, and orthotics are recommended. While Sever’s disease will resolve as the growth plate closes and children are done growing, it is still a good idea to maintain sufficient arch support for the feet.
