Summer is the perfect time to enjoy vacations, outdoor activities, and longer days in the sun, but it’s also a season when your feet need a little extra attention. From flip-flops and sandals to hiking trails and pool decks, summer activities can increase your risk of foot pain, injuries, and infections.
Use this summer foot care checklist to keep your feet healthy and comfortable all summer long:
1. Choose Supportive Footwear
While flip-flops are convenient, they often lack the arch support and cushioning your feet need. If you’re spending long hours walking, shopping, or sightseeing, opt for supportive sandals or athletic shoes to help prevent heel pain and fatigue.
2. Protect Your Feet at Pools and Locker Rooms
Public pools, locker rooms, and gym showers can harbor fungus that causes athlete’s foot and toenail infections. Wear waterproof sandals in these areas and dry your feet thoroughly afterward.
3. Stay Hydrated
Hot weather can contribute to swelling in your feet and ankles. Drinking plenty of water and taking breaks in the shade can help reduce swelling, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.
4. Don’t Walk Barefoot Outdoors
Whether you’re at the beach, pool, or in your backyard, walking barefoot can increase your risk of cuts, burns, splinters, and infections. Always wear shoes or sandals to protect your feet.
5. Keep Your Feet Clean and Dry
Wash your feet daily and dry carefully between your toes. Moisture trapped between the toes can increase the risk of fungal infections, especially during hot, humid weather.
6. Trim Your Toenails Properly
Cut your toenails straight across and avoid trimming them too short. Proper nail care helps reduce the risk of painful ingrown toenails.
7. Inspect Your Feet Regularly
Check your feet for blisters, cuts, redness, swelling, or other changes, especially if you have diabetes or reduced sensation. Catching problems early can prevent more serious complications, such as infections, serious wounds, or even amputation.
8. Wear Sunscreen
Your feet are often exposed during the summer but are easy to overlook. Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and ankles whenever you’re spending time outdoors.
9. Replace Worn Out Shoes
If your sneakers have seen plenty of miles, summer is a great time to replace them. Worn shoes provide less support and can contribute to foot pain and injuries. Typically, if the tread on the bottom of your shoes is completely worn off or flat, it’s time to get a new pair.
10. Don’t Ignore Foot Pain
Persistent foot or ankle pain isn’t something you should “walk off.” Early treatment can often prevent minor issues from becoming more serious and help you stay active all summer.

Your feet carry you through every summer adventure, so give them the care they deserve. By following these simple tips, you can reduce your risk of common foot problems and enjoy the season with confidence.
